2026 marks 25 years of the Living Wage movement
For a quarter of a century, the Living Wage movement has helped reshaped what fair pay looks like in the UK.
What began as a hopeful idea, driven by low-paid workers in East London organising for fair pay, has grown into one of the most successful civil society campaigns of the 21st century.
The real Living Wage makes a huge difference to thousands of workers, strengthens businesses and helps support a fairer society. As we mark this major milestone, we're celebrating how far the movement has come and setting out a clear vision for the future: creating work that works for everyone.
The impact of the Living Wage movement
Over the past 25 years, the Living Wage movement has grown from a small grass roots movement to widely recognised standard for good work.
- More than 16,000 employers across the UK have chosen to pay the real Living Wage, helping to lift the pay of hundreds of thousands of workers each year.
- Collectively Living Wage Employers have helped put around £4.2 billion back into the pockets of the lowest paid workers.
- Today around one in seven people in the UK work for a Living Wage Employer.
What began as a local campaign has become a national movement with real, measurable impact on people’s lives.
The history of the Living Wage movement
The origins of the movement:
The Living Wage movement began in the early 2000s in East London, driven by low-paid workers organising through Citizens UK to challenge the reality of working poverty.
Community groups, faith organisations and trade unions all came together around a simple demand: that people in work should earn enough to meet the real cost of living.
Gaining momentum:
From these grassroots beginnings, the movement grew rapidly. The real Living Wage gained political and public support, and in 2011 the Living Wage Foundation was established to recognise and celebrate employers choosing to go beyond the legal minimum.
What started as a local, people-powered campaign has since become a national movement, spanning sectors and regions, and reshaping how fair pay is understood across the UK.
