Hospitality is the third largest employer in the UK and accounts for 1 in 10 jobs across the country, in businesses ranging from coffee shops to night clubs, wedding venues and holiday accommodation. The sector plays a significant role in our local economies. But, it has, for the last 12 years, remained the sector with the highest levels of jobs paying below the Living Wage. A record number of employers are joining the Living Wage movement and reaping the benefits. There are now over 600 Living Wage Employers in the hospitality sector, benefiting more than 17,000 workers.

This toolkit has drawn evidence from Middlesex University’s research report: ‘The real Living Wage in the London hospitality sector: opportunities and challenges’, written by Dr Andrea Werner and Dr Siân Stephens. It is based on interviews with hospitality workers and with Living Wage Employers in the hospitality sector.

The toolkit introduces hospitality businesses to the process of becoming accredited as a Living Wage Employer and the relevant policies. It highlights the challenges, solutions and benefits faced by hospitality employers and includes case studies of hospitality employers that have successfully implemented the real Living Wage.
